History of GEICO

GEICO: Everything you need to know

Whether you know about using a gecko or a caveman, History of GEICO is one of the best-known insurance companies in the US. The Maryland-based firm is a wholly owned company Berkshire Hathaway and offers more than 27 million vehicles with more than 16 million policymakers. It is the power of insurance to be reckoned with.

A brief history of GEICO

GEICO was founded in 1936 by a team of couples, Leo and Lillian Goodwin, who had the courage to establish a new company during the Great Depression. The company was established as a Public Service Insurance Company, for the sole purpose of customer service clients and certain categories of registered military officers. Within a year, History of GEICO drafted 3,700 policies and hired 12 employees.

In 1948, Benjamin Graham, a professor of business at Columbia University in NY , chose to take a position in GEICO. This was a pivotal moment in the history of the company as Graham would later teach young Warren Buffet in Columbia and thus establish a popular connection between GEICO and Buffet. In 1951, Buffet visited Washington to learn more about GEICO and had an unimaginable meeting with Lorimer Davidson, a successful businessman and good friend of the Good wins. After the meeting, Buffet decided to buy GEICO stock – and the rest is history.

When Goodwin retired in 1958, Davidson was appointed. He continued to lead the company in 20 years of consistent growth, achieved a $ 1 million policy in 1964 and generated $ 150 million in insurance premiums in 1965. Growth slowed in the 1970s and years of aggressive expansion began to take a heavy toll on the company’s reserves.

GEICO responded by using clever writing – an act that created Warren Buffet’s second appearance, when he reportedly bought $ 1 million from GEICO shares in 1976. In the 1980s, GEICO introduced 24 hours a day, a 365-day claims, sales and service service. This customer-focused model remains with the company today.

The Berkshire Buffet made a bid

In the early 1990s, GEICO gained momentum under the leadership of a new chairman, president and chief executive Olza “Tony” Nicely. Warren Buffet’s investment company in Berkshire Hathaway applied for shares in GEICO’s remaining stock in 1995, and in 1996 GEICO became a Berkshire Hathaway service.
