How to Stay Safe

To stay safe and avoid heat-related problems:

  • Use Air Conditioning: If you have air conditioning, keep it on. If you do not have one, find a cooling center where you can live. In New York City, you can call 311 to find a cooling center easily.  Nassau County on Long Island will have several cooling centers that will remain open, including one in Uniondale that is going to operate 24/7.
  • Limit Time Outside: Try to remain indoors as much as possible. If you need to go outside for any work then drink plenty of water or wear light clothing, and you can rest in the shade if you find it in your route.
  • Watch for Health Risks: Heat can be dangerous, especially for older adults and those facing severe health conditions. You must check on friends and neighbors who might need your help.

Code Red Alert and Air Quality

In Newark, New Jersey, a code red alert has been issued. This alert is important for senior citizens and for people with health issues. Air quality will also be poor, so those who have respiratory issues,  take necessary precautions.

Storms and Severe Weather

While most of the day will remain dry, strong storms are going to appear in the late afternoon or maybe in the evening. These storms could bring:

  • Strong Winds: Wind gusts may exceed 50 mph, which can damage trees and power outages.
  • Large Hail: Hail could be over an inch in size, which can damage cars and property.

The storms are expected to be severe but it would not be widespread. Central and southern New Jersey are more likely to experience these storms.

What’s Next?

After the storms, temperatures will drop to normal. By Thursday, expect cooler weather in the 70s. The rest of the week will have moderate temperatures but with a chance of rain and storms on Saturday.

Cooler autumn-like weather is on the way to Morning. Temperatures could drop to the 50s, so be ready for a change in the weather.

Summary

In summary, be ready for extreme heat and strong storms on Wednesday. You should make yourself cool, hydrated, and safe. Keep an eye on weather updates and use cooling centers if you do not have air conditioning. Enjoy the cooler weather coming later in the week!
