Boar’s Head Recall 2024: 57 Cases and 9 Deaths from Listeria Outbreak

A listeria outbreak in Boar’s Head deli meats has made 57 people sick in 18 states, and 9 have died. Here’s what you should know to make yourself and your family safe.

 

What’s Happening?

  • Cases: 57 people have been diagnosed with listeriosis.
  • Deaths: 9 people have died.
  • States: This outbreak has spread in 18 states, including New York, Florida, and Illinois.

Listeria is a serious bacteria that is very dangerous, especially for older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and maybe those who have weak immune systems. 

What’s the Recall About?

  • Start Date: Boar’s Head removed their products from stores on July 26, 2024.
  • Expanded Recall: By July 30, they removed 71 products. 
  • Products Affected: Their dangerous products are liverwurst, bologna, and “Cappy Style” ham.
  • Dates: The products were made from May 10 and July 29, 2024, and can be used till October 17, 2024.

The listeria which is a dangerous bacteria was found in a liverwurst sample from a store in Baltimore. The bacteria that are making people sick match these bacteria.

What Should You Do?

  • Check Your Fridge: You should check for the products with the label  “EST. 12612” or “P-12612”.
  • Act Quickly: If you have any of these recalled products in your fridge, then you should either return them to the store or throw them away but do not eat them.
  • Clean Up: If you have these products in your fridge, then you should clean your fridge.

Signs of Listeriosis

Symptoms can of Listeriosis are as follows

  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue

This bacteria can also cause you a stiff neck, headache, confusion, or seizures. Symptoms remain for up to 10 weeks after exposure.

How to Protect Yourself
  • Heat Deli Meats: You should heat deli meats to 165°F because at this temperature all the harmful bacteria are dead.
  • Clean Regularly: You should also clean your kitchen surfaces and meat slicers so that they will avoid any contamination and keep you safe.
  • Watch Your Health: If you start having symptoms of listeriosis, you must visit your doctor right away.
